Spend some quality time with Kachemak Bay

Kachemak Bay, home to the National Estuarine Research Reserve, hosts a remarkably high level of biological activity, due in part to water circulation patterns which keep nutrients, bait fish, and shellfish, and in turn, predators such as sea mammals, in the bay year-round.

Our captains and guides are dedicated to educating guests on the magnificent animals of Alaska, as well as upholding sustainable wildlife watching practices, with a focus on preserving the marine environment.

Alaska’s amazing, abundant wildlife is one of our most unique features, and seeing bears, eagles, whales, seals and more may well be the highlight of your vacation, especially if you are traveling with kids. Of course, these creatures have their own schedules and routines, so you’re never guaranteed to see a specific animal, but with our experienced guides and captains, you will see many different species during your stay with us. A few tips to maximize your experience:

  • Dawn and dusk are the best times to see most wildlife, so be particularly alert during these times.
  • Move slowly and quietly: most creatures will hear or smell you before you see them, but if you stay still, they may return.
  • The only exception is bears—then you want to make noise when you are out and about, especially if there has been a recent sigting.
  • Bring a 200mm lens or longer for the best chance at high-quality wildlife photography.
  • Listen to your guide who will educate you on the proper wildlife-viewing etiquette for each sighting

Kachemak Bay supports important recreational, subsistence, and commercial fishing. The area is also known for marine transportation, wildlife tourism and photography, and is home to many threatened and endangered species.

Orca, minke, and humpback whales, plus many other aquatic creatures, are known to roam the waters surrounding Halibut Cove, often popping up to say hello to guests.
