Yikes! Vacation Nightmares: Avoid These Common Vacation Mistakes

July 02, 2018

Summer is officially here and families across the U.S. are packing up to head out on their next big family vacation. Many families enjoy vacations because it lets them spend time together. But if you're not careful, your dream vacation can quickly turn into a nightmare.

Here are some of the worst vacation mistakes you can make and how you can keep your own summer vacation from falling overboard.

You don't consider the climate of your vacation spot

Many families like to go on beach vacations. But if you're not an ocean-person, you may not be prepared for the weather where many of these vacation spots are.

Unfortunately, it isn't enough to pick and choose a vacation spot based on its attractions. You also need to consider whether the vacation spot's climate is right for you and your family.

For instance, Florida is a top vacation spot. But it can be incredibly hot and humid, which can put your kids (and you) in a bad mood. Stick to vacationing in warmer climates during the cooler months.

During the summer, Alaska vacations may be more up your alley. Alaskan summers are surprisingly mild and range between 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. In fact, Alaska welcomed 1,857,500 out-of-state visitors between May and September 2016 alone.

You forget that you're supposed to be on vacation

As the primary planner of your vacation, it can be all too easy to forget you're supposed to be enjoying your stay. This can make your vacation stressful and put pressure on the activities you want to experience.

Try to loosen the reins on your vacation planning and be more flexible. This will help you create more room to actually enjoy your vacation and the time you're spending with your family.

You don't meet everyone's basic needs

You may be tempted to forgo certain needs during your trip to stay on schedule. But it's not a good idea.

Toddlers can get cranky if they need an afternoon nap, but they aren't given one. And both kids and adults can get stressed and frustrated if they don't have enough food or sleep. So don't forgo yours or your family's basic needs on your family trip.
